Youngest Golf Fans Participate In Reading Contest For Chance to Attend 50th Annual RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing

Heritage Classic Foundation’s eighth annual Plaid About Reading program, presented by Future Scholar, South Carolina’s tax-advantaged 529 College Savings Plan, kicks off today and will run through Friday, Feb. 23. Plaid About Reading gives the youngest fans across the Lowcountry the chance to read their way to the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing. Again this year, 12 area schools are participating in the program.

“We have extra special things planned for our 50th anniversary, and that is no different for this program,” said Steve Wilmot, tournament director for the RBC Heritage. “Each participating school has a chance to invite Willie to their school and the classes that win the trip to the RBC Heritage in April will be in for a real treat.”

The lighthearted scholastic competition gives area elementary school students in grades K-5 a chance to win $500 for their school, $150 for their class, tickets to the RBC Heritage and the chance to meet a professional PGA TOUR golfer.

“Encouraging the importance of reading is vital for preparing our state’s future scholars,” said South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis, whose office is responsible for administering the Future Scholar 529 plan. “The costs associated with attending college can be overwhelming, but Future Scholar is the smart and easy way for families to save for that important life goal.”

The 12 participating schools are Beaufort Elementary School, Bluffton Elementary, Coosa Elementary, Cross Schools, Hilton Head Christian Academy, Hilton Head Island Elementary, Joseph S. Shanklin Elementary School, Michael C. Riley Elementary & ECC, Okatie Elementary, Pritchardville Elementary, Sea Pines Montessori Academy and St. Francis Catholic School.

This will be Joseph S. Shanklin Elementary School’s first time participating in the program.
